Probiotics and Haloprogin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIFUNGALS

Why this applies to Haloprogin

Haloprogin falls under ANTIFUNGALS — the group Probiotics interacts with.

Theoretically, taking antifungals with certain probiotics might decrease the effectiveness of probiotics.
Some probiotics such as Saccharomyces boulardii are fungi. Therefore, simultaneously taking antifungals might kill a significant number of these organisms.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a nice bit of good news: Haloprogin is a topical antifungal you rub on the skin to treat things like athlete's foot or ringworm. It stays mostly where you apply it and isn't designed to travel through your gut, so it really shouldn't reach the probiotics living in your digestive tract.

The interaction on file is the other direction anyway. The concern is that an antifungal could weaken a probiotic, not the reverse. Some probiotics, like Saccharomyces boulardii, are actually a yeast, so a strong antifungal could in theory knock them back. With a skin cream this is very unlikely to be an issue. This is only a theoretical, lab-based idea, so don't lose sleep over it. If you ever take an antifungal by mouth, just space it out and check with your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Haloprogin page

“Haloprogin (Halotex), an antifungal applied to the skin for infections like ringworm, carries a supplement list that deserves genuine attention, one entry above all. Activated charcoal, the only major-rated interaction, adsorbs many medications and can cut how much reaches the body, even for drugs not taken by mouth.”

About Probiotics

What is Probiotics?

  • Digestive health and regularity
  • Antibiotic-associated diarrhea
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Vaginal and urinary health
  • Immune support
  • General gut microbiome balance

Probiotics are live 'friendly' microbes that may help certain digestive conditions, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea and some cases of IBS, though benefits depend heavily on the specific strain and dose. They are generally well tolerated for healthy people but should be used with caution by those with serious illness or weakened immune systems. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor to pick a product that matches your goal.
