Probiotics + Doxycyline
Doxycyline brand name: Doxychel.
Probiotics has a moderate interaction with Doxycyline. Theoretically, taking antibiotic drugs with certain probiotics might decrease the effectiveness of probiotics.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Doxycyline
Doxycyline falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Probiotics interacts with.
Many probiotics are bacteria. Since these preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of sensitive organisms. Human research shows that taking probiotic concurrently with antibiotic treatment does not affect the diversity of the gut microbiome compared with antibiotic treatment in the absence of probiotics. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and these preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to know if you're taking doxycycline along with a probiotic supplement: this interaction works in one direction. The antibiotic doesn't get weaker or stronger, and you won't get more doxycycline side effects (like stomach upset or sun sensitivity) from the combo. Instead, since probiotics are live bacteria and doxycycline is designed to kill bacteria, taking them at the same time may wipe out some of those friendly organisms before they can do their job.
This is more of a theoretical concern based on how the two work, and one human study didn't show a real difference. Still, an easy fix is to separate them by at least two hours. If you're using the probiotic for a specific reason, check with your pharmacist on the best timing.

Questions About Probiotics or Doxycyline
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. From our pharmacist’s overview on the Doxycyline page
“I read the supplement list for doxycycline (Doxychel) as one to approach with real care, starting with its major-rated entries. Heavy alcohol, including beer and wine, adds to the liver strain this antibiotic can cause, botanicals such as Siberian cocklebur can compound stress on the kidneys, and St.”

About Probiotics
What is Probiotics?
- Digestive health and regularity
- Antibiotic-associated diarrhea
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Vaginal and urinary health
- Immune support
- General gut microbiome balance
Probiotics are live 'friendly' microbes that may help certain digestive conditions, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea and some cases of IBS, though benefits depend heavily on the specific strain and dose. They are generally well tolerated for healthy people but should be used with caution by those with serious illness or weakened immune systems. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor to pick a product that matches your goal.
About Doxycycline
What Is Doxycycline Used For?
Brand name: Doxychel
Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline family of antibiotics. It's prescribed for many types of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tick-borne illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and eye infections. It's also used to help prevent malaria and, in some cases, as a helper treatment for severe acne.
In situations where penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used — due to allergy, for example — doxycycline can step in as an alternative. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.

Doxycyline Is Linked to Lower Levels of 7 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Doxycyline as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Probiotics — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
