Quercetin and Aspirin, Meprobamate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Quercetin interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Meprobamate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Quercetin in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ORGANIC ANION TRANSPORTER 3 (OAT3) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Meprobamate

Aspirin, Meprobamate falls under ORGANIC ANION TRANSPORTER 3 (OAT3) SUBSTRATES — the group Quercetin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the effects and adverse effects of OAT3 substrates.

In vitro research shows that quercetin is a strong non-competitive inhibitor of OAT3, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values as low as 0.75 mcM. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist for Micrainin, which combines aspirin with meprobamate (a muscle relaxant and mild sedative). One of the ways your kidneys help clear aspirin is through a transporter called OAT3. In lab dish studies, quercetin blocks that transporter pretty strongly. If the same thing happened in your body, aspirin might leave a little slower and build up a bit, which could mean more stomach upset, heartburn, or a higher chance of bruising or bleeding.

That said, this is only theoretical right now. It has been seen in test tubes, not in real people, and food amounts of quercetin are very unlikely to matter. If you take high-dose quercetin supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first rather than changing anything on your own.

ORGANIC ANION TRANSPORTER 1 (OAT1) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Aspirin, Meprobamate also falls under ORGANIC ANION TRANSPORTER 1 (OAT1) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the effects and adverse effects of OAT1 substrates.

In vitro research shows that quercetin is a strong non-competitive inhibitor of OAT1, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values less than 10 mcM. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with Micrainin, which combines aspirin and meprobamate (a sedative). Your kidneys use a little transporter called OAT1 to help clear certain drugs, including aspirin, out of your body. In lab dish studies, quercetin blocks that transporter pretty strongly. The idea is that if aspirin can't be cleared as quickly, a bit more could linger in your system, which could nudge up aspirin's effects and side effects like stomach upset, heartburn, ringing in the ears, or easier bruising.

That said, this is theoretical. It has only been seen in test tubes, not in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Food amounts of quercetin almost certainly don't matter. If you take high-dose quercetin supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Quercetin

What is Quercetin?

Quercetin
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Antioxidant support
  • Heart and blood pressure health
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Immune support
  • Exercise recovery

Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties found in many common foods and sold as a supplement. While early research is interesting for allergies, blood pressure, and inflammation, strong human evidence is limited for most uses. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking high-dose supplements.
