Why this applies to Atomoxetine

Atomoxetine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Quercetin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

In vitro research show that quercetin inhibits CYP2D6. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear atomoxetine (Strattera) out of your system. In lab tests, quercetin appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, atomoxetine could build up a bit more than usual, which might mean stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects like a faster heartbeat, raised blood pressure, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, decreased appetite, or feeling jittery.

Here is the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, and it has not been shown in actual people. Everyday food amounts of quercetin are very unlikely to matter. Before starting a high-dose quercetin supplement, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up so they can keep an eye on you.

What Is Atomoxetine Used For?

Brand name: Strattera

Atomoxetine — available as capsules (Atomoxetine, Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Strattera) and as an oral solution (Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Atoncy) — is approved for the treatment of ADHD in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older. It is meant to be part of a total treatment program that may also include psychological, educational, and social supports.

ADHD is diagnosed when persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity cause meaningful problems in daily life — at school, at work, or at home — in more than one setting. Atomoxetine is not approved to treat major depressive disorder.
