Quercetin and Atropine, morphine sulfate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Quercetin interacts with whole categories of medication. Atropine, morphine sulfate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Quercetin in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Atropine, morphine sulfate

Atropine, morphine sulfate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Quercetin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

In vitro research show that quercetin inhibits CYP2D6. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the honest picture: in test-tube studies, quercetin can block a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, which is one of the pathways your body uses to process certain medicines. If that enzyme were slowed, a drug it clears could build up a bit and lead to stronger effects. For something like morphine, that might mean more drowsiness, constipation, nausea, or slowed breathing; with atropine you could see more dry mouth, blurry vision, or a faster heartbeat.

That said, this has only been seen in the lab, never confirmed in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Food amounts of quercetin are very unlikely to matter. Before starting a high-dose supplement alongside these medications, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Atropine, morphine sulfate also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, concomitant use might alter the effects and adverse effects of P-glycoprotein substrates.

There is preliminary evidence that quercetin inhibits the gastrointestinal P-glycoprotein efflux pump, which might increase the bioavailability and serum levels of drugs transported by the pump. A small study in healthy volunteers reported that pretreatment with quercetin increased bioavailability and plasma levels after a single dose of cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune). Also, two small studies have shown that quercetin might decrease the absorption of talinolol, a substrate transported by the gastrointestinal P-glycoprotein efflux pump. However, in another small study, several days of quercetin treatment did not significantly affect the pharmacokinetics of saquinavir (Invirase). The reason for these discrepancies is not entirely clear. Until more is known, use quercetin cautiously in combination with P-glycoprotein substrates.

Here's the gist for this combination: morphine is carried in and out of cells by a transport protein called P-glycoprotein, and quercetin may gently block that pump. In theory, blocking it could let a little more morphine into your system, which means stronger effects like drowsiness, slowed breathing, constipation, or feeling lightheaded. The atropine piece is less studied here, but extra atropine effects could show up as dry mouth, blurry vision, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to be honest with you though: this is mostly theoretical and based on small, mixed studies, not solid morphine research. Food amounts of quercetin almost certainly won't matter. Before starting a high-dose supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.

About Quercetin

What is Quercetin?

Quercetin
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Antioxidant support
  • Heart and blood pressure health
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Immune support
  • Exercise recovery

Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties found in many common foods and sold as a supplement. While early research is interesting for allergies, blood pressure, and inflammation, strong human evidence is limited for most uses. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking high-dose supplements.
