Why this applies to Cariprazine Hydrochloride

Cariprazine Hydrochloride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Quercetin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might alter the effects and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that pretreatment with quercetin increases plasma levels and prolongs the half-life of a single dose of cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), a substrate of CYP3A4. Animal research also shows that pretreatment with quercetin increases plasma levels and prolongs the half-life of losartan (Cozaar) and quetiapine (Seroquel), substrates of CYP3A4. Other laboratory research also shows that quercetin inhibits CYP3A4. However, one clinical study shows that quercetin can increase the metabolism of midazolam, a substrate of CYP3A4, and decrease serum concentrations of midazolam by about 24% in some healthy individuals, suggesting possible induction of CYP3A4.

Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear cariprazine (Vraylar) out of your system. Quercetin can nudge that enzyme, and the research is genuinely mixed. In most lab and animal studies it blocks CYP3A4, which would let cariprazine build up a bit and could mean more drowsiness, restlessness (akathisia), dizziness, or trouble sleeping. But one human study showed quercetin actually sped up that enzyme, which could weaken the drug instead.

Because the evidence is mostly test-tube and animal data, this is theoretical and may never cause you a problem, especially with everyday food amounts. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Before adding a quercetin supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or prescriber.

What Is Cariprazine Used For?

Brand name: Vraylar

Vraylar (cariprazine) is approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and in adolescents aged 13 and older. It is also used for the acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults and in children aged 10 and older.

In adults, Vraylar is additionally approved to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression) and as an add-on (adjunctive) therapy alongside antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD).
