Quercetin + Clinafloxacin
Clinafloxacin brand name: Clinafloxacin.
Clinafloxacin falls into 2 drug categories that Quercetin can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the effects and adverse effects of OATP substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Quercetin interacts with whole categories of medication. Clinafloxacin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Quercetin in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)
1 of 2Why this applies to Clinafloxacin
Clinafloxacin falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP) — the group Quercetin interacts with.
In vitro evidence shows that quercetin can inhibit organic anion-transporting peptide (OATP) 1B1-mediated uptake of estrone-3-sulfate and pravastatin. Furthermore, clinical research in healthy males shows that intake of quercetin along with pravastatin increases the AUC of pravastatin by 24%, prolongs its half-life by 14%, and decreases its apparent clearance by 18%, suggesting that quercetin modestly inhibits the uptake of pravastatin in hepatic cells.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with combining quercetin and clinafloxacin. Quercetin can gently block a transporter called OATP that helps move certain drugs into your liver cells. Clinafloxacin is handled in part by these transporters, so the theory is that quercetin could slow its uptake and let a little more linger in your bloodstream. That might nudge up both the antibiotic's effect and its side effects, things like nausea, an upset stomach, or in rare cases tendon or nerve discomfort common to this fluoroquinolone family.
Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical, based on lab work and a study using pravastatin where the change was modest. Food amounts of quercetin are very unlikely to matter. Before adding a concentrated supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
2 of 2Clinafloxacin also falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS.
In vitro, quercetin binds to the DNA gyrase site on bacteria, which may interfere with the activity of quinolone antibiotics.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version on pairing quercetin with Clinafloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. The concern isn't that quercetin builds the drug up or causes more side effects. It's the opposite: in lab dish studies, quercetin seems to attach to the same bacterial target (an enzyme called DNA gyrase) that this antibiotic works on. In theory, that could get in the antibiotic's way and make it less effective at clearing your infection.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes mostly from test-tube work, not solid human studies, so we really don't know how much it matters in real life. Food amounts of quercetin are very unlikely to be an issue. If you're considering a high-dose supplement while on this antibiotic, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so your infection gets fully treated.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clinafloxacin page
“If you have been prescribed clinafloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic, start with the four interactions rated major, because they all do the same thing: apple, grapefruit, and orange juice, along with activated charcoal, can sharply cut how much of the drug you absorb, and an antibiotic that never reaches your bloodstream cannot clear the…”

About Quercetin
What is Quercetin?
- Seasonal allergies
- Antioxidant support
- Heart and blood pressure health
- Anti-inflammatory support
- Immune support
- Exercise recovery
Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties found in many common foods and sold as a supplement. While early research is interesting for allergies, blood pressure, and inflammation, strong human evidence is limited for most uses. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking high-dose supplements.
