Quercetin + Lomefloxacin
Lomefloxacin brand name: Maxaquin.
Lomefloxacin falls into 2 drug categories that Quercetin can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the effects and adverse effects of OATP substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Quercetin interacts with whole categories of medication. Lomefloxacin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Quercetin in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)
1 of 2Why this applies to Lomefloxacin
Lomefloxacin falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP) — the group Quercetin interacts with.
In vitro evidence shows that quercetin can inhibit organic anion-transporting peptide (OATP) 1B1-mediated uptake of estrone-3-sulfate and pravastatin. Furthermore, clinical research in healthy males shows that intake of quercetin along with pravastatin increases the AUC of pravastatin by 24%, prolongs its half-life by 14%, and decreases its apparent clearance by 18%, suggesting that quercetin modestly inhibits the uptake of pravastatin in hepatic cells.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for lomefloxacin (Maxaquin). Quercetin can gently block a transporter called OATP, which helps move certain drugs into your liver and tissues. If that uptake slows down, a drug that uses this pathway can hang around at slightly higher levels than usual. In theory, that could mean a bit more of lomefloxacin's typical side effects, like an upset stomach, dizziness, headache, or sun sensitivity (this antibiotic is known for making skin burn more easily).
That said, the real-world evidence here is thin and mostly based on a different drug (pravastatin), where the change was modest. Food amounts of quercetin almost certainly won't matter; concentrated supplements are the bigger question. Before pairing high-dose quercetin with lomefloxacin, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
2 of 2Lomefloxacin also falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS.
In vitro, quercetin binds to the DNA gyrase site on bacteria, which may interfere with the activity of quinolone antibiotics.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with lomefloxacin (Maxaquin) and quercetin. Lomefloxacin is a quinolone antibiotic that kills bacteria by jamming up a bacterial enzyme called DNA gyrase. In lab dish studies, quercetin seems to grab onto that very same spot on the bacteria. The worry is that quercetin could compete with the antibiotic and make it work a little less well, which in theory might mean the infection isn't cleared as effectively.
I want to be honest about how shaky this is. This is mostly test tube evidence, not proven in real patients, so it may not matter much in practice, especially at food-level amounts of quercetin. Still, since you're treating an actual infection, I'd avoid high-dose quercetin supplements while on this antibiotic and check with your pharmacist first.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Quercetin
What is Quercetin?
- Seasonal allergies
- Antioxidant support
- Heart and blood pressure health
- Anti-inflammatory support
- Immune support
- Exercise recovery
Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties found in many common foods and sold as a supplement. While early research is interesting for allergies, blood pressure, and inflammation, strong human evidence is limited for most uses. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking high-dose supplements.
