Rucaparib Camsylate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Quercetin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

In vitro research show that quercetin inhibits CYP2D6. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Rubraca (rucaparib). This is one of those cancer medicines your body partly clears using a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. In test-tube studies, quercetin seems to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, more rucaparib could linger in your system, which in theory might bump up its usual side effects like nausea, fatigue, low blood counts, or changes in taste.

But I want to be honest about the strength here: this is only lab data, and it has never actually been seen in people. Quercetin from everyday foods like apples and onions is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Since rucaparib is serious cancer therapy, please run any quercetin supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

Rucaparib Camsylate also falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, concomitant use might alter the effects and adverse effects of P-glycoprotein substrates.

There is preliminary evidence that quercetin inhibits the gastrointestinal P-glycoprotein efflux pump, which might increase the bioavailability and serum levels of drugs transported by the pump. A small study in healthy volunteers reported that pretreatment with quercetin increased bioavailability and plasma levels after a single dose of cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune). Also, two small studies have shown that quercetin might decrease the absorption of talinolol, a substrate transported by the gastrointestinal P-glycoprotein efflux pump. However, in another small study, several days of quercetin treatment did not significantly affect the pharmacokinetics of saquinavir (Invirase). The reason for these discrepancies is not entirely clear. Until more is known, use quercetin cautiously in combination with P-glycoprotein substrates.

Here's the gist for Rubraca (rucaparib). Your body uses a kind of cellular gatekeeper called P-glycoprotein to push certain drugs back out of your gut and cells. Quercetin, in higher supplement doses, may partly block that pump. The theory is that less pumping could let a bit more rucaparib stay in your system, which might nudge up its levels and side effects (think nausea, tiredness, low blood counts, or changes in liver tests).

I want to be honest: this is theoretical and based on weak, mixed studies in other drugs, not rucaparib itself. Food amounts of quercetin almost certainly don't matter. But since rucaparib is a serious cancer medicine, please check with your oncology team or pharmacist before adding a concentrated quercetin supplement.

About Rucaparib

What Is Rucaparib Used For?

Brand name: Rubraca

Rubraca (rucaparib) is used for two types of cancer in adults who carry a harmful BRCA gene mutation (either inherited or found in the tumor). First, it is used as maintenance treatment — meaning ongoing treatment to keep cancer from coming back — in people with recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer who responded (fully or partially) to platinum-based chemotherapy.

Second, Rubraca treats metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (advanced prostate cancer that has stopped responding to hormone-lowering treatment) in adults who have already received androgen receptor-directed therapy. Patients must be tested with an FDA-approved companion diagnostic to confirm the BRCA mutation before starting Rubraca for prostate cancer.
