Quercetin + Valsartan
Valsartan brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan.
Valsartan falls into 2 drug categories that Quercetin can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking quercetin with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Quercetin interacts with whole categories of medication. Valsartan falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Quercetin in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Valsartan
Valsartan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Quercetin interacts with.
Quercetin can modestly decrease blood pressure in people with mild hypertension. Theoretically, it might have additive blood pressure lowering effects when used with antihypertensive drugs.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: quercetin can lower blood pressure a little on its own. Since Valsartan (Diovan) is already working to bring your blood pressure down, stacking the two together may push it down a bit too far. This isn't about quercetin changing how Valsartan is processed in your body, it's just two things nudging your pressure in the same direction.
If your blood pressure drops too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or wobbly when you stand up quickly. Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical and based on weak evidence, and small food amounts of quercetin (apples, onions, berries) are unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding one.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Valsartan also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.
A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking quercetin 500 mg twice daily for 10 days prior to taking diclofenac, a CYP2C9 substrate, increases diclofenac plasma levels by 75% and prolongs the half-life by 32.5%. Animal research also shows that pretreatment with quercetin increases plasma levels and prolongs the half-life of losartan (Cozaar), a substrate of CYP2C9. Furthermore, laboratory research shows that quercetin inhibits CYP2C9.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear valsartan. Quercetin, especially in concentrated supplement doses, can slow that enzyme down. When that happens, a bit more valsartan can linger in your bloodstream than usual. Valsartan is not a prodrug, so more drug sticking around means its blood-pressure-lowering effect could be a little stronger than expected.
In real life, that might show up as dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling extra tired, particularly when you stand up quickly. This is still mostly theoretical and based on small or animal studies, so don't panic. The amount of quercetin in everyday foods is unlikely to matter. Before starting a high-dose supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

“Of the 182 supplements and herbs on file for valsartan (Diovan), a medication for high blood pressure and heart failure, most either deepen its blood-pressure-lowering effect or work against it, and the four rated major deserve genuine respect before the rest of the page. About Quercetin
What is Quercetin?
- Seasonal allergies
- Antioxidant support
- Heart and blood pressure health
- Anti-inflammatory support
- Immune support
- Exercise recovery
Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties found in many common foods and sold as a supplement. While early research is interesting for allergies, blood pressure, and inflammation, strong human evidence is limited for most uses. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking high-dose supplements.
About Valsartan
What Is Valsartan Used For?
Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan
Valsartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have a weakened heart muscle. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.
Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (other brands) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.

Valsartan Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Valsartan as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Quercetin — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
