Why this applies to Riluzole

Riluzole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Resveratrol interacts with.

Theoretically, resveratrol might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that resveratrol can inhibit CYP1A2 enzymes. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Your body relies mainly on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear riluzole. In lab studies (test tube only, not real people yet), resveratrol can slow that enzyme down. If it did the same thing in the body, riluzole could clear more slowly and build up a bit. Riluzole is the active drug itself, not a prodrug, so higher levels would mean stronger effects and possibly more side effects like dizziness, tiredness, nausea, or changes in your liver blood tests.

The good news: this is only a theoretical concern based on early research, and it hasn't actually been seen in humans. Still, because riluzole already needs regular liver monitoring, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a resveratrol supplement.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
