Zileuton falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Resveratrol interacts with.

Theoretically, resveratrol might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that resveratrol can inhibit CYP1A2 enzymes. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Zileuton (Zyflo). Your body uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break this medication down. Resveratrol, in lab studies, seems to slow that same enzyme. In theory, that could let zileuton build up a bit more than usual, which might nudge up the chance of side effects like nausea, stomach upset, headache, or changes in liver enzymes (zileuton already needs liver monitoring).

The honest part: this is only seen in test-tube and animal research, not in real people, so it's more of a maybe than a known problem. Small food amounts of resveratrol (a few grapes or berries) almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Before adding a resveratrol supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Zileuton also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, resveratrol might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that resveratrol can inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, clinical research shows that taking resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks does not necessitate dose adjustments to medications metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for Zileuton (Zyflo), your daily asthma controller. One of the ways your body clears this medicine is through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, resveratrol can slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let zileuton build up slightly, which might mean a touch more of its usual effects, like stomach upset, headache, or nudging your liver numbers higher (zileuton already requires liver monitoring).

The good news: this concern comes from lab work, not real people. Actual human research found that even high-dose resveratrol (3000 mg daily for weeks) didn't force any dose changes for CYP3A4 medicines. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but do mention any new resveratrol supplement to your pharmacist or doctor, especially while your liver is being watched.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
