Rhubarb + Interferon Beta-1b
Interferon Beta-1b brand names: Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia.
Rhubarb has a moderate interaction with Interferon Beta-1b. Theoretically, concomitant use of rhubarb with potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage.

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Interferon Beta-1b
Interferon Beta-1b falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Rhubarb interacts with.
Some animal research suggests that anthraquinones in rhubarb might have hepatotoxic effects. Also, rhubarb use has been linked to at least 24 cases of liver injury, although details on the dose of rhubarb and duration of use in these cases is unclear.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with pairing rhubarb root and Betaseron (interferon beta-1b). Interferon beta-1b can be tough on the liver on its own, and your doctor likely checks your liver enzymes with bloodwork during treatment. Concentrated rhubarb root supplements contain anthraquinones that, in animal studies and a small number of human reports, have been tied to liver injury. So the worry is simply that two things hard on the liver, used together, might add up.
I want to be honest: this is a theoretical interaction based on how these things behave, not proven head-to-head data. Rhubarb isn't changing how interferon works, and eating rhubarb stalks in a pie is very different from taking concentrated root capsules. Still, since liver health matters here, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a rhubarb supplement.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Interferon Beta-1b page
“If you inject interferon beta-1b (Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia) for multiple sclerosis, this supplement list is one to take seriously, mostly because of your liver. Interferon beta-1b can raise liver enzymes on its own, and 38 of the 57 ingredients on file add their own liver stress on top of that.”

About Rhubarb
What is Rhubarb?
- Constipation
- Digestive upset
- Menopausal symptoms
- Kidney and liver conditions (traditional)
- Pancreatitis (hospital/traditional use)
Rhubarb root has a long history of use as a laxative and in traditional Chinese medicine, and its edible stalks are a common food. Most medicinal claims are backed by limited or low-quality evidence, and the root can cause cramping and diarrhea. The leaves are toxic and should never be eaten, and rhubarb supplements are best avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Interferon Beta-1b Injection Used For?
Brand names: Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia
-
Interferon beta-1b injection is used to reduce episodes of symptoms in patients with relapsing-remitting (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time) of multiple sclerosis (MS, a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and patients may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control). Interferon beta-1b is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It is not known exactly how interferon beta-1b works to treat MS.
