Interferon Beta-1b falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Hemp Agrimony interacts with.

Hemp agrimony contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). Theoretically, using hemp agrimony with hepatotoxic drugs might have additive adverse effects on the liver. Some drugs that can adversely affect the liver include acetaminophen (Tylenol and others), amiodarone (Cordarone), carbamazepine (Tegretol), isoniazid (INH), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), methyldopa (Aldomet), fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), erythromycin (Erythrocin, Ilosone, others), phenytoin (Dilantin), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), simvastatin (Zocor), and many others.

Here's the concern with combining hemp agrimony and your Interferon Beta-1b (Betaseron, Extavia). This herb can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, natural compounds that are tough on the liver. Interferon beta-1b can also stress the liver on its own, and your doctor likely checks your liver enzymes with blood work while you're on it. Stacking the two could, in theory, add up and burden the liver more.

I'll be honest: this is a theoretical caution based on how each one works, not something proven in studies. Still, with a known liver-irritating herb, I'd play it safe. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using any product with hemp agrimony.

What Is Interferon Beta-1b Injection Used For?

  • Interferon beta-1b injection is used to reduce episodes of symptoms in patients with relapsing-remitting (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time) of multiple sclerosis (MS, a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and patients may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control). Interferon beta-1b is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It is not known exactly how interferon beta-1b works to treat MS.
