Acarbose falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Hemp Agrimony interacts with.

Hemp agrimony contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). Theoretically, using hemp agrimony with hepatotoxic drugs might have additive adverse effects on the liver. Some drugs that can adversely affect the liver include acetaminophen (Tylenol and others), amiodarone (Cordarone), carbamazepine (Tegretol), isoniazid (INH), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), methyldopa (Aldomet), fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), erythromycin (Erythrocin, Ilosone, others), phenytoin (Dilantin), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), simvastatin (Zocor), and many others.

Here's the concern with pairing hemp agrimony and acarbose. This isn't about one herb changing how the other works at the enzyme level. Instead, it's about the liver. Hemp agrimony can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are natural compounds that may be hard on the liver. Acarbose, while uncommon, has also been linked to liver enzyme changes in some people. The worry is that using both together could add up and put more stress on your liver.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical caution based on how these substances behave, not proven cases. Still, because of the liver risk from the herb itself, I'd skip internal use of hemp agrimony and check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

What Is Acarbose Used For?

Acarbose tablets are used to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. They are always used together with a proper diet and regular exercise — not as a replacement for them.

Acarbose can be used on its own or combined with other diabetes medicines such as sulfonylureas, insulin, or metformin to get better blood sugar control.
