Deferasirox falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Hemp Agrimony interacts with.

Hemp agrimony contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). Theoretically, using hemp agrimony with hepatotoxic drugs might have additive adverse effects on the liver. Some drugs that can adversely affect the liver include acetaminophen (Tylenol and others), amiodarone (Cordarone), carbamazepine (Tegretol), isoniazid (INH), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), methyldopa (Aldomet), fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), erythromycin (Erythrocin, Ilosone, others), phenytoin (Dilantin), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), simvastatin (Zocor), and many others.

Here's the concern with pairing hemp agrimony and deferasirox. This isn't about one changing how the other is broken down. It's simpler than that: both can be hard on your liver. Hemp agrimony can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, natural compounds known to injure liver cells. Deferasirox already carries its own warning for liver problems, so stacking the two could add up and put more strain on your liver.

This is a theoretical caution based on how these substances behave, not on real-world case reports, so try not to panic. Still, deferasirox needs regular liver monitoring, and watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using any hemp agrimony product.

Hemp agrimony contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) which are substrates of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that induce CYP3A4 might increase the conversion of PAs to toxic metabolites. Some drugs that induce CYP3A4 include carbamazepine (Tegretol), phenobarbital, phenytoin (Dilantin), rifampin, rifabutin (Mycobutin), and others.

Here's the thing to understand with this pairing: it's not that hemp agrimony changes how Deferasirox (Exjade, Jadenu) works. It's the other way around. Hemp agrimony contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are natural compounds that can damage the liver. Deferasirox is a mild inducer of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, the same enzyme that turns those alkaloids into their more toxic forms. So in theory, taking both could speed up the creation of liver-harming byproducts.

I'll be honest, this concern comes only from lab and animal data, not real patient studies, so it's theoretical. But Deferasirox itself can already stress the liver, so stacking it with an herb that experts mostly advise against taking internally isn't worth the gamble. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using any hemp agrimony product.

Hemp agrimony is a traditional European herb that has been used for digestion, colds, and as a general tonic, but there is very little reliable human research to support these uses. More importantly, the plant can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids that may harm the liver, so most experts do not recommend taking it internally. What Is Deferasirox Used For?

Brand names: Exjade, Jadenu

Deferasirox — available as tablets (including Exjade and Jadenu) and oral powder granules (including Jadenu) — is used to treat chronic iron overload in patients 2 years and older whose bodies have accumulated too much iron from repeated blood transfusions.

It is also used to treat chronic iron overload in patients 10 years and older who have non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT) syndromes — a group of inherited blood disorders — when liver iron levels and blood ferritin levels meet specific thresholds. The safety and effectiveness of deferasirox when combined with other iron-chelation therapies have not been established.
