Nitrofurantoin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Hemp Agrimony interacts with.

Hemp agrimony contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). Theoretically, using hemp agrimony with hepatotoxic drugs might have additive adverse effects on the liver. Some drugs that can adversely affect the liver include acetaminophen (Tylenol and others), amiodarone (Cordarone), carbamazepine (Tegretol), isoniazid (INH), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), methyldopa (Aldomet), fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), erythromycin (Erythrocin, Ilosone, others), phenytoin (Dilantin), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), simvastatin (Zocor), and many others.

Here's the concern with pairing hemp agrimony and nitrofurantoin. This isn't about one changing the levels of the other. Instead, it's about adding two liver stressors together. Hemp agrimony can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, natural compounds that may injure the liver. Nitrofurantoin, while usually well tolerated, is known to occasionally cause liver inflammation on its own. Stacking them could, in theory, raise the strain on your liver.

I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical caution based on how each can affect the liver, not on hard human studies. Still, since most experts already advise against swallowing hemp agrimony at all, I'd skip it during your antibiotic course and check with your pharmacist or doctor first. Watch for yellowing skin, dark urine, or belly pain.

More importantly, the plant can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids that may harm the liver, so most experts do not recommend taking it internally. About Nitrofurantoin

What Is Nitrofurantoin Used For?

Brand names: Macrodantin, Furadantin, Furatoin, Macrobid

Nitrofurantoin is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by certain susceptible bacteria. The capsule forms (including Macrodantin) are indicated for UTIs due to susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and certain strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Nitrofurantoin oral suspension (Furadantin) is indicated for adults and children 1 month of age and older for the same types of UTIs.

Nitrofurantoin is not used for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or infections of the tissue around the kidney (perinephric abscesses). Because it works primarily in the urine and does not spread widely through body tissues, it may not fully clear the infection in some patients, and the UTI may return after treatment.
