Valproic Acid falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Hemp Agrimony interacts with.

Hemp agrimony contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). Theoretically, using hemp agrimony with hepatotoxic drugs might have additive adverse effects on the liver. Some drugs that can adversely affect the liver include acetaminophen (Tylenol and others), amiodarone (Cordarone), carbamazepine (Tegretol), isoniazid (INH), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), methyldopa (Aldomet), fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), erythromycin (Erythrocin, Ilosone, others), phenytoin (Dilantin), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), simvastatin (Zocor), and many others.

Here's the concern with pairing hemp agrimony and valproic acid. Valproic acid is already one of those seizure medicines that can be tough on the liver on its own. Hemp agrimony can contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, natural compounds that may also harm the liver. So the worry is that the two together could add up and put extra strain on your liver. This isn't about one drug speeding up or slowing down the other, it's about a double hit to the same organ.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not proven cases. Still, signs of liver trouble like nausea, unusual tiredness, belly pain, dark urine, or yellowing skin would matter here. Most experts already advise against swallowing hemp agrimony. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Valproic Acid Used For?

Brand names: Depakene, Depacon, Valproate

Valproic acid capsules (brands Valproic and Valproic Acid) and valproic acid oral solution (brand Valproic Acid) are both used to treat epilepsy. Specifically, they are approved for complex partial seizures (either alone or with other seizure types) as monotherapy or add-on therapy, and for simple and complex absence seizures as sole therapy or add-on therapy.

Both forms are intended for adults and pediatric patients. Always follow your prescriber's guidance on which product and regimen is right for you.
