Why this applies to Interferon Beta-1b

Interferon Beta-1b falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the concern with combining sweet clover and your Interferon Beta-1b (Betaseron, Extavia). This isn't about one drug speeding up or slowing down the other. Instead, both can be tough on the liver on their own. Interferon Beta-1b is already known to raise liver enzymes (your AST and ALT) in some people, and sweet clover's coumarin can also stress the liver. Stacked together, that strain may add up.

This is mostly theoretical, but there is a real case report of an MS patient whose liver enzymes shot up sharply while taking both, then settled once they stopped. Watch for signs like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness. Please don't change anything on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or neurologist first, since they likely already monitor your liver during interferon treatment.

  • Interferon beta-1b injection is used to reduce episodes of symptoms in patients with relapsing-remitting (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time) of multiple sclerosis (MS, a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and patients may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control). Interferon beta-1b is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It is not known exactly how interferon beta-1b works to treat MS.
