Why this applies to Propoxyphene

Propoxyphene falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the simple version. Propoxyphene (Darvon) is processed by your liver, and it can occasionally stress the liver on its own. Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in large or spoiled supplement doses has been linked to mild, temporary liver irritation in some people. Put the two together and the worry is that they could add up and make liver trouble a bit more likely.

I'll be straight with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances behave, not a proven, common reaction. It does not change how propoxyphene works or its usual effects like drowsiness or constipation. Still, before pairing them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you already have liver concerns.

This three-ingredient combination — butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine — is used to relieve the symptoms of tension headache (also called muscle contraction headache). All supported products, including tablets, capsules, and oral solution, share this same approved use.

It is worth knowing that evidence for using this combination to treat repeated, frequent tension headaches over time is limited. Because butalbital can be habit-forming, extended or repeated use is not recommended.
