Why this applies to Dapsone

Dapsone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the gist: dapsone already puts some strain on your liver, and it can also affect your blood (like lowering hemoglobin or causing a condition called methemoglobinemia). Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in large or concentrated supplement amounts has occasionally been linked to mild, reversible liver irritation. Stack the two together and, in theory, you could nudge up the odds of liver stress while on dapsone.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how each one behaves, not strong proof. A tiny culinary brush with sweet clover is unlikely to matter, but daily concentrated capsules are a different story. Sweet clover is also a quality-control headache when it spoils. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual tiredness, and please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

What Is Dapsone Used For?

Brand names: Dapsone, Avlosulfon, Aczone

Dapsone tablets are used to treat dermatitis herpetiformis (a chronic, intensely itchy blistering skin condition) and leprosy (all forms, except where proven resistance to dapsone exists). For leprosy, dapsone tablets are typically used in combination with other anti-leprosy medicines.

Aczone Gel (dapsone gel, 7.5%) and dapsone gel are indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 9 years of age and older. This topical form is applied to the skin and is not used for leprosy or dermatitis herpetiformis.
