Why this applies to Alectinib Hydrochloride

Alectinib Hydrochloride falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the thing about alectinib (Alecensa): it's already known to be tough on the liver. A good number of people taking it see their liver enzymes climb, which is why your oncology team checks bloodwork regularly while you're on it. Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in large or concentrated amounts has been linked to liver irritation on its own.

So the worry here is simply doubling up on liver stress. Stacking sweet clover on top of alectinib could, in theory, make liver inflammation more likely or harder to interpret on lab tests. I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how each works, not proven cases together. Still, with a drug this important, please run any sweet clover use by your oncologist or pharmacist first before adding it.

What Is Alectinib Used For?

Brand name: Alecensa

Alecensa (alectinib) is used in adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for a gene change called ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase). Your tumor must be confirmed ALK-positive by an FDA-approved test before starting treatment.

Alecensa is approved for two situations: as adjuvant treatment (after surgery to remove the tumor, for tumors that are large enough or have spread to nearby lymph nodes) to help prevent the cancer from coming back, and for metastatic NSCLC (cancer that has already spread to other areas of the body).
