Levofloxacin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the gist: levofloxacin is an antibiotic that, on rare occasions, can be tough on the liver. Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in large or concentrated supplement doses has also been linked to mild liver irritation in some people. The worry is simply that stacking two things that can each stress the liver might add up.

I want to be honest with you, though. This concern is theoretical, based mostly on how these substances behave rather than strong studies. Levofloxacin is not a prodrug, so this isn't about one boosting the other's strength. Most folks take a short course of levofloxacin and finish fine. Still, watch for signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

What Is Levofloxacin Used For?

Brand names: Levaquin, Levaquin Injection, Leva-pak

Levofloxacin treats bacterial infections in adults, including pneumonia (both community-acquired and hospital-acquired), skin infections, urinary tract infections, kidney infections, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and sinus infections. It is also used after exposure to inhalational anthrax and for plague.

Because levofloxacin carries significant risks, it should only be used for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, acute bacterial worsening of chronic bronchitis, and acute bacterial sinusitis when no other treatment option is available. Always use it only for infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be bacterial.
