Why this applies to Abiraterone Acetate

Abiraterone Acetate falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the thing to know about abiraterone (Yonsa): it can already be tough on the liver. Your oncology team checks your liver enzymes regularly for that very reason, since the drug can sometimes cause elevations in those numbers. Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in concentrated amounts has been linked to its own liver irritation in some people, especially if the plant has spoiled.

So the worry is simply doubling up: two things that can each stress the liver at the same time. This is a theoretical concern based on how each works, not a proven, common reaction, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, with a medication this important, please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before adding sweet clover. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual fatigue.

About Abiraterone

What Is Abiraterone Used For?

Brand names: Zytiga, Yonsa

Abiraterone acetate tablets are used to treat two types of advanced prostate cancer: metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC — cancer that has spread and keeps growing despite low testosterone levels) and metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer (CSPC — cancer that has spread but still responds to hormone-lowering treatment). It is always taken together with a corticosteroid — most products pair with prednisone, while Yonsa is specifically indicated with methylprednisolone.

All products — including Abiraterone, Abiraterone Acetate, Abirtega, Yonsa, and Zytiga — are taken by mouth as a tablet. Yonsa is approved only for metastatic CRPC, while the other products (Abiraterone, Abiraterone Acetate, Abirtega, and Zytiga) are approved for both metastatic CRPC and metastatic high-risk CSPC.
