Rice Protein and Perindopril Erbumine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs)

Why this applies to Perindopril Erbumine

Perindopril Erbumine falls under ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs) — the group Rice Protein interacts with.

In laboratory research, hydrolyzed rice protein inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). In animal research, the inhibition of ACE is correlated with a reduction in systolic blood pressure. So far, this effect has not been shown in humans. Theoretically, concomitant use of rice protein and ACE inhibitors may increase the risk of blood pressure becoming too low. Use with caution. ACE inhibitors include benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), fosinopril (Monopril), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), moexipril (Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace), and trandolapril (Mavik).
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here is the gist with rice protein and your perindopril (Aceon). In a test tube and in animal studies, broken-down (hydrolyzed) rice protein appears to gently block the same ACE enzyme that your medication blocks. Since both could be nudging your blood pressure in the same downward direction, the theory is that combining them might lower it a little too much.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though: this has only been seen in lab and animal research, not in people, so it is mostly theoretical. If you do use both, just keep an eye out for signs your pressure dipped low, like dizziness, lightheadedness when standing, or feeling unusually tired. A scoop of rice protein in a smoothie is very unlikely to be a problem, but if you notice those symptoms, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.

About Rice Protein

What is Rice Protein?

  • Building and maintaining muscle
  • Post-workout recovery
  • Plant-based protein source
  • Meal replacement and shakes
  • Weight management support

Rice protein is a plant-based protein powder made from rice that offers an easy way to add protein to your diet, especially if you avoid dairy or animal products. It is generally considered safe and well tolerated, though on its own it is lower in the amino acid lysine and is often blended with pea protein for a more complete amino acid profile. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it if you have kidney problems or other health conditions.
