Why this applies to Bendamustine

Bendamustine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Rosemary interacts with.

Theoretically, rosemary might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that rosemary induces CYP1A2 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for bendamustine (Treanda, Belrapzo, Vivimusta) and rosemary. Part of how your body clears bendamustine runs through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In lab dish studies, rosemary compounds appeared to speed up that enzyme. If that happened in a person, it could clear bendamustine a little faster and, in theory, make it slightly less effective against your leukemia or lymphoma.

The reassuring part: this is rated minor and unlikely, and it has only been seen in test tubes, never in actual people. Cooking with rosemary almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated rosemary supplements or the essential oil are a different story. Since bendamustine is serious chemo, please run any rosemary supplement by your oncology team or pharmacist before using it.

What Is Bendamustine Injection Used For?

Brand names: Treanda, Belrapzo, Vivimusta

Bendamustine hydrochloride injection is used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). It is also used for adults with indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) — a slow-growing type of blood cancer — when the disease has continued to progress during or within six months of treatment with rituximab or a rituximab-containing regimen.

For CLL, how well bendamustine works compared to other first-line treatments (aside from chlorambucil) has not been fully established.
