Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Atacand HCT (candesartan plus hydrochlorothiazide) and rue. The concern isn't about your blood pressure numbers or how the medicine itself works. Instead, it's about your skin. The hydrochlorothiazide part of this combo is a known photosensitizer, meaning it can make your skin more prone to sunburn. Rue carries its own sun-sensitizing plant compounds (furanocoumarins and psoralens), so stacking the two could add up and raise your risk of a quicker, nastier reaction in the sun.

To be fair, this is based on scattered case reports, not strong studies, so it's more a theoretical caution than a sure thing. Still, if you take rue, lean on sunscreen, hats, and shade, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Rue

What is Rue?

Rue
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Digestive upset
  • Muscle spasms and pain
  • Headache
  • Insect repellent (topical)
  • Traditional folk remedy

Rue is a strong-smelling herb from southern Europe with a long history in folk medicine, but there is very little reliable human research to support its health uses. It can be toxic in larger amounts and is considered unsafe during pregnancy, so most people should avoid it or use it only under professional guidance.
