Trimipramine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, rue might increase the risk for phototoxicity when used with photosensitizing drugs.
Rue contains photosensitizing furanocoumarins and psoralens and has been associated with multiple reports of phototoxic reactions. There is also one case report of an increased phototoxic response to psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy associated with ingestion of rue.

Here's the thing to know about pairing rue with trimipramine (Surmontil). This isn't about how your body breaks down the medicine or how much ends up in your blood. Instead, it's about your skin. Trimipramine can already make some people more sensitive to sunlight, and rue contains natural compounds (furanocoumarins and psoralens) that do the same thing. Stacking the two could make you sunburn faster or react more strongly to UV light.

I'll be honest, this is mostly theoretical and based on a few scattered case reports, so it's not a strong, proven interaction. Still, if you take trimipramine and are considering rue, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first. And either way, wearing sunscreen and covering up outdoors is just smart.

What Is Trimipramine Used For?

Brand names: Surmontil, Trimip, Rhotrimine, Tripramine, Trimp

Trimipramine capsules are indicated for the relief of symptoms of depression. Endogenous depression — depression that arises from within, rather than from an obvious outside cause — is more likely to respond to treatment than other types.

In clinical studies, trimipramine worked as well as imipramine in hospitalized patients with depression, and was comparable to amitriptyline in less severely depressed outpatients.
