Fluphenazine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, rue might increase the risk for phototoxicity when used with photosensitizing drugs.
Rue contains photosensitizing furanocoumarins and psoralens and has been associated with multiple reports of phototoxic reactions. There is also one case report of an increased phototoxic response to psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy associated with ingestion of rue.

Here's the thing about combining rue with fluphenazine: both can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Fluphenazine already carries a known tendency to cause sunburn-like reactions, rashes, or skin discoloration when you spend time in the sun. Rue contains plant compounds called furanocoumarins and psoralens that do much the same thing, so stacking them together could make your skin react more strongly than usual.

I want to be honest that this is mostly theoretical, based on a few scattered case reports rather than solid studies. Still, it's a reasonable thing to be mindful of. If you do use rue, simple steps like sunscreen, hats, and limiting strong sun exposure help. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting any herbal product.

What Is Fluphenazine Used For?

Brand names: Prolixin, Permitil, Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are indicated for the management of psychotic disorders. Fluphenazine Hydrochloride Injection is also used for psychotic disorders and can bridge patients to oral therapy.

Fluphenazine Decanoate Injection is a long-acting form specifically intended for patients who need extended antipsychotic treatment — for example, those with chronic schizophrenia who benefit from a single injection that can last up to four weeks or longer. It is not approved for behavioral problems related to intellectual disability, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
