Hydroxyzine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, rue might increase the risk for phototoxicity when used with photosensitizing drugs.
Rue contains photosensitizing furanocoumarins and psoralens and has been associated with multiple reports of phototoxic reactions. There is also one case report of an increased phototoxic response to psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy associated with ingestion of rue.

Here's the thing to know about pairing rue with hydroxyzine: this isn't about rue changing how your body breaks the medicine down. It's about your skin and the sun. Rue naturally contains compounds called furanocoumarins and psoralens, which can make your skin much more sensitive to sunlight. Hydroxyzine itself can occasionally cause some sun sensitivity too, so the worry is that the two together could add up.

In plain terms, that could mean an easier, faster sunburn or a rash on skin that gets sunlight. I'll be honest with you though, this is mostly theoretical and based on a few scattered case reports, not strong studies. If you do use rue, be smart with sunscreen and covering up, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Hydroxyzine Used For?

Brand names: Atarax, Vistaril, Ucerax

Hydroxyzine is used to relieve anxiety and tension related to psychoneurosis (anxiety-based mental health conditions) and as a supportive treatment when anxiety is part of another medical condition. Oral forms — including tablets, capsules, and oral solution — are used for anxiety relief and to manage itching (pruritus) caused by allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria (hives), atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and histamine-driven itch. Oral forms are also used as a sedative before and after surgery or general anesthesia.

Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride intramuscular injection is used specifically when a shot is needed — for example, in acute psychiatric or emotional emergencies, acute alcohol withdrawal with anxiety symptoms or delirium tremens, control of nausea and vomiting (except during pregnancy), and as pre- and post-operative or pre- and post-partum supportive medication to reduce narcotic requirements and control nausea.
