Saffron and Flibanserin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Flibanserin

Flibanserin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Saffron interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron and CNS depressants might have additive sedative effects.
Clinical research shows that taking saffron extract 60 mg orally daily for 26 weeks can cause drowsiness and sedation. Animal research suggests that adding saffron to hexobarbital further increases sleeping and slows motor activity.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Addyi (flibanserin) can already make you sleepy or lightheaded, especially when you first start it or stand up too fast. Saffron, when taken as a concentrated supplement, may have its own mild calming, drowsy effect. Put the two together and those sleepy feelings could stack up a bit, leaving you more tired, dizzy, or foggy than usual.

I want to be honest about how solid this is: it's mostly theoretical, based on how each one behaves rather than studies of the two combined. The sprinkle of saffron in a paella almost certainly won't matter. Daily saffron capsules are the real question. Since flibanserin already carries warnings about drowsiness (and is risky with alcohol), please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

About Saffron

What is Saffron?

Saffron
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Memory and cognition
  • Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.

About Flibanserin

What Is Flibanserin Used For?

Brand name: Addyi

Addyi is approved to treat acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) — a condition where low sexual desire causes significant distress or relationship difficulty — in women under 65. "Acquired" means the low desire developed after a period of normal desire; "generalized" means it happens regardless of the situation or partner.

Addyi is not intended for use in men, and it is not a sexual performance enhancer. It is also not meant for HSDD that is caused by a medical condition, a psychiatric condition, relationship problems, or another medication.
