ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Nimodipine

Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects.
Animal and human research suggests that saffron extract can decrease blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: saffron may gently lower blood pressure on its own. Nimodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels, so combining the two could nudge your blood pressure down a little more than expected. In real life that might show up as feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or faint, especially when you stand up quickly. Nimodipine isn't a prodrug, so this is simply an additive effect, not a change in how the drug is activated.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: it's mostly from lab and animal studies, so this is more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Food-amount saffron in cooking is very unlikely to matter, but concentrated supplements could. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding a saffron supplement.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nimodipine page

“Nimodipine (Nimotop, Nymalize) is given after bleeding around the brain to stop blood vessels from clamping down, and the supplement interactions on file earn real caution, not a shrug. Of the 227 ingredients listed, most either interfere with CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears nimodipine, or lower blood pressure on their own and sta…”

About Saffron

What is Saffron?

Saffron
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Memory and cognition
  • Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.

About Nimodipine

What Is Nimodipine Used For?

Brand names: Nimotop, Nymalize

Nimodipine — available as capsules and oral solution — is used to improve neurological outcomes after a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of bleeding that occurs around the brain when an intracranial berry aneurysm ruptures. It works to reduce the incidence and severity of ischemic deficits (areas of the brain damaged by reduced blood flow) that can follow this kind of bleed.

This use applies across nimodipine capsules, nimodipine oral solution, and Nymalize oral solution. It is indicated for adult patients regardless of how severe their neurological condition is at the time treatment begins.
