Here's the gist: phenobarbital is a barbiturate, which means it already slows down your brain and nervous system. It causes drowsiness, calm, and slower breathing on its own. Some natural compounds in sage appear to have a mild calming, sedative-like effect of their own, so the worry is that pairing the two could add up and leave you more groggy, dizzy, or sleepy than expected.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. The concern comes only from lab and animal studies, not from people, so it's theoretical and on the weaker end of evidence. A little sage on your dinner is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated sage extracts or the essential oil are a different story. Since phenobarbital is a strong drug, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding sage supplements.

Sage is a common kitchen herb that is generally safe in food amounts and is traditionally used for sore throats, digestion, sweating, and memory.
