Apomorphine falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Schisandra might increase the levels and clinical effects of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research shows that schisandra extracts and constituents such as schisandrin B inhibit P-glycoprotein mediated efflux in intestinal cells and in P-glycoprotein over-expressing cell lines. Additionally, a small clinical study shows that schisandra increases the peak concentration and overall exposure to talinolol, a P-glycoprotein probe substrate. Theoretically, schisandra might inhibit the efflux of other P-glycoprotein substrates.

Here's the gist for Apokyn (apomorphine): schisandra may block a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which is one of the doormen that helps move certain drugs out of your body. When that doorman is slowed down, a drug like apomorphine could hang around at slightly higher levels than expected.

In practice, that might mean stronger or more frequent side effects, things like nausea, dizziness, sleepiness, sudden drops in blood pressure when you stand, or more involuntary movements. The honest part: this concern comes mostly from lab and animal studies, plus one small human study using a different drug, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, apomorphine is potent and given by injection, so please run this combination by your doctor or pharmacist before adding schisandra.

About Apomorphine Injection

What Is Apomorphine Injection Used For?

Brand names: Uprima, Apokyn, APO-go, APO-go Pen, APO-go PFS

Apomorphine injection is used to treat acute, intermittent episodes of hypomobility — often called 'off' episodes — in people with advanced Parkinson's disease. These include both predictable 'end-of-dose wearing off' and unpredictable 'on/off' episodes, when Parkinson's symptoms suddenly return or worsen between doses of other medications.

It is typically used alongside other Parkinson's medications, not as a standalone treatment. Apokyn is given as an as-needed subcutaneous (under-the-skin) injection. Onapgo is administered as a continuous subcutaneous infusion with the option of supplemental doses.
