Why this applies to Triazolam

Triazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Schisandra can increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Most clinical and laboratory research shows that schisandra, administered either as a single dose or up to twice daily for 14 days, inhibits CYP3A4 and increases the concentration of CYP3A4 substrates such as cyclophosphamide, midazolam, tacrolimus, and talinolol. Although one in vitro and animal study shows that schisandra may induce CYP3A4 metabolism, this effect appears to be overpowered by schisandra's CYP3A4 inhibitory activity and has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your sleep medicine triazolam is cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and schisandra appears to slow that enzyme down. When that happens, triazolam can build up higher than expected, so its effects get stronger and last longer.

In real life that could mean feeling extra drowsy or groggy, dizziness, trouble waking up, poor coordination, or next-morning hangover and memory fog. Triazolam is already a fast, potent benzodiazepine, so even a modest bump in levels can matter. Most of the proof here comes from lab and animal work plus a few human studies on similar drugs, so it's reasonable but not rock solid. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, rather than changing anything on your own.

What Is Triazolam Used For?

Brand names: Halcion, Triazo, Apo-Triazo, Gen-Triazolam, Mylan-Triazolam, Novo-Triolam, Nu-Triazo

Triazolam tablets are approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. Treatment is generally intended for 7 to 10 days. Halcion (a brand of triazolam) is specifically indicated for this same short-term use in adults.

Using triazolam for more than 2 to 3 weeks requires a full re-evaluation by your doctor to rule out an underlying medical or psychiatric condition driving the sleep problem.
