Naproxen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Theoretically, schisandra might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro and animal research suggests that schisandra induces CYP2C9 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for naproxen. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear naproxen out of your system. Lab and animal studies hint that schisandra may speed up that enzyme, which could in theory clear naproxen a little faster and make it work less well. For you, that might look like your pain relief, swelling, or stiffness not being controlled as well as usual.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This effect has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in people, so it's very much theoretical. Naproxen is not a prodrug, so the direction (weaker effect, not stronger) is what we'd expect. If you take both, just keep an eye on whether your naproxen still helps, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Naproxen

What Is Naproxen Used For?

Brand names: Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Anaprox DS, Naproxyn, Navalbine, Naproxen, Naprosyn EC, Napro-Na, Aleve, Arthroxen, Synflex, EC-Naprosyn

Naproxen tablets, naproxen sodium tablets, and naproxen oral suspension are used to relieve the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. They are also used for tendonitis, bursitis, and acute gout, and for managing pain and primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).

Naproxen Sodium Controlled-Release Tablets are indicated for the same conditions plus the relief of mild to moderate pain. Several over-the-counter naproxen sodium products are indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains from headache, backache, muscular aches, toothache, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain, and the common cold, and to temporarily reduce fever.
