Omeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Theoretically, schisandra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that schisandra inhibits CYP2C19, and animal research shows that schisandra increases the concentration of voriconazole, a CYP2C19 substrate. Theoretically, schisandra may also inhibit the metabolism of other CYP2C19 substrates. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with these two: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to break down omeprazole. In lab and animal studies, schisandra seems to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in people, omeprazole could clear out more slowly and build up a bit, meaning a slightly stronger effect than expected. Omeprazole is generally well tolerated, so realistically you might just notice things like headache, nausea, gas, or loose stools.

The big caveat: this is theoretical, drawn from test tube and animal data, and it has never actually been shown in humans. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since both are processed the same way, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially with concentrated supplement doses.

Here's the basic idea with Schisandra and your omeprazole. Lab and animal studies hint that Schisandra may speed up a liver enzyme (CYP2C9) that helps clear certain drugs. If that happened with omeprazole, your body could break it down a little faster, which in theory might leave you with less acid control. You might notice heartburn or reflux creeping back, or feel like the medicine just isn't holding things in check as well.

That said, I don't want to overstate this. This is theoretical, seen only in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in people. So it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, but it's not a reason to panic or stop anything on your own.

Schisandra can increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Most clinical and laboratory research shows that schisandra, administered either as a single dose or up to twice daily for 14 days, inhibits CYP3A4 and increases the concentration of CYP3A4 substrates such as cyclophosphamide, midazolam, tacrolimus, and talinolol. Although one in vitro and animal study shows that schisandra may induce CYP3A4 metabolism, this effect appears to be overpowered by schisandra's CYP3A4 inhibitory activity and has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for omeprazole. Schisandra appears to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the routes your body uses to clear omeprazole. If that pathway is partly blocked, omeprazole could hang around a bit longer and build up slightly, which might mean a touch more of its usual effects (and possibly mild side effects like headache, nausea, or stomach upset). Omeprazole isn't a prodrug, so it stays active rather than losing its punch.

Honestly, this concern comes mostly from lab and animal work, not from solid human studies with omeprazole, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Omeprazole is also fairly forgiving. Still, if you plan to use schisandra regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Omeprazole

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
