Drug & supplement interaction

Shiitake Mushroom + Gentamicin (Topical)

Gentamicin (Topical) brand name: Garamycin.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Shiitake Mushroom and Gentamicin (Topical) in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Shiitake Mushroom and Gentamicin (Topical)

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Gentamicin (Topical) and Shiitake Mushroom in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Shiitake Mushroom safety at a glance

Shiitake Mushroom overall Use caution Generally safe as a food, but concentrated supplements and raw mushrooms can cause reactions in some people.
Pregnancy Use caution Eating shiitake as food is likely fine, but concentrated supplements should be avoided due to lack of safety data.
Breastfeeding Use caution Food amounts are likely fine, but there is not enough data on supplement doses, so caution is advised.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Gentamicin (Topical)

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Gentamicin (Topical) is filed under a single classification — topical drugs. Shiitake Mushroom has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being cytochrome p450 2d6 (cyp2d6) substrates (moderate) and immunosuppressants (moderate) — and none of Gentamicin (Topical)’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Shiitake Mushroom and Gentamicin (Topical) May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

“Orally, shiitake mushrooms can cause shiitake dermatitis, a skin eruption that resembles whiplash marks, usually found on the trunk and limbs. This dermatitis is thought to be a toxic response to lentinan or other compounds found normally in uncooked or inadequately cooked shiitake mushroom. The rash can be made worse by scratching.”

This page covers Shiitake Mushroom only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Gentamicin (Topical) page lists 3 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

By severity: 2 moderate · 1 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Gentamicin (Topical) page

“If you use gentamicin cream or ointment (Garamycin) on your skin, the supplement picture is narrow and workable. Only three ingredients are on file, none rated major, and all three matter for the same reason: they are also applied to the skin, and they can change how much of the antibiotic gets absorbed through it.”

About Shiitake Mushroom

What is Shiitake Mushroom?

  • Immune support
  • General wellness and nutrition
  • Cholesterol and heart health
  • Adjunct in cancer care (lentinan, AHCC)
  • Antioxidant support

Shiitake is a popular edible mushroom that is nutritious and safe to eat as food for most people. Some of its extracts (like lentinan and AHCC) have been studied as immune support, mainly alongside cancer treatment, but evidence for most supplement uses is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated shiitake supplements.

Lentinula edodes · Omphalotaceae · Fruiting body (mushroom cap and stem); mycelium extracts · Whole food (fresh or dried mushrooms), capsules, tablets, powders, liquid extracts, and standardized extracts such as lentinan and AHCC

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Shiitake Mushroom is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Shiitake Mushroom record says about it on its own.

Shiitake Mushroom: dosing

There is no official standardized dose for shiitake supplements, and products vary widely in strength and form. Some research used specialized extracts (like lentinan given by injection in a medical setting), which is very different from over-the-counter capsules. If you choose a shiitake supplement, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount.

About Gentamicin Topical

What Is Gentamicin Topical Used For?

Brand name: Garamycin

Gentamicin sulfate topical is used to treat primary skin infections — infections that start directly in the skin — such as impetigo contagiosa, superficial folliculitis (infected hair follicles), furunculosis (boils), ecthyma, sycosis barbae, and pyoderma gangrenosum.

It also treats secondary skin infections, where bacteria have moved into already-irritated or damaged skin. This includes infected eczema, infected contact dermatitis (like poison ivy that gets infected), pustular acne, pustular psoriasis, infected seborrheic dermatitis, and bacterial infections on top of fungal or viral skin conditions. It has also been used successfully for infected stasis ulcers, infected superficial burns, infected insect bites and stings, infected lacerations and abrasions, paronychia (infected nail folds), and wounds from minor surgery.
