Propranolol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Shiitake Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, shiitake mushroom might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro studies suggest that the shiitake mushroom extract AHCC might induce the CYP2D6 enzyme. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for propranolol. Your body clears this beta blocker partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Lab and test-tube studies hint that a concentrated shiitake extract (AHCC) might speed that enzyme up. If that happened in people, your body could clear propranolol a little faster, which in theory might make it work less well. That could mean your blood pressure or heart rate creeps back up, or you notice more tremor or migraines if that's why you take it.

The reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern seen in lab studies, never reported in real patients. Eating shiitake as food is not a worry. If you're thinking about concentrated shiitake supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Propranolol (Cardiovascular) Used For?

Brand names: Inderal LA, Inderal, Angilol, Syprol, Inderal Injection, Half-Inderal LA, Bedranol SR, Half Beta Prograne, Beta Prograne, Lopranol LA, Slo-Pro, InnoPran XL

This intravenous (IV) form of propranolol is used in hospital or clinical settings to treat dangerous heart rhythm problems. It is generally reserved for life-threatening arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) or those that occur during anesthesia.

Specific conditions it treats include fast heart rates coming from the upper chambers of the heart (supraventricular tachycardia), certain arrhythmias caused by digitalis toxicity, dangerous ventricular rhythms that haven't responded to other treatments, and fast heart rates caused by excess adrenaline-like substances during surgery.
