Why this applies to Thioridazine

Thioridazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Shiitake Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, shiitake mushroom might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro studies suggest that the shiitake mushroom extract AHCC might induce the CYP2D6 enzyme. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for thioridazine (Mellaril): your liver clears it partly through an enzyme called CYP2D6. Lab studies hint that a concentrated shiitake extract (AHCC) might speed that enzyme up. If it did, your body could clear thioridazine a little faster, which in theory means a weaker effect and a higher chance your symptoms aren't as well controlled.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This idea comes only from test-tube work, not from real people, so it's very much theoretical. Eating shiitake as food is unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question. Since thioridazine is a medication that needs steady, careful dosing, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any shiitake supplement.

What Is Thioridazine Used For?

Brand name: Mellaril

Thioridazine Hydrochloride tablets are used for the management of schizophrenia — but only in patients who have already tried at least two other antipsychotic medications without adequate results, either because those drugs didn't work well enough or caused intolerable side effects.

Because thioridazine carries serious heart-rhythm risks, it is considered a last-resort option for schizophrenia, not a first-line treatment. It is not approved for dementia-related psychosis or any other psychiatric condition.
