Here's the simple version: ramelteon (Rozerem) nudges your brain toward sleep by acting like melatonin, and it can leave you feeling drowsy. Skullcap is an herb that may also have a calming, sedating effect on the nervous system. Put them together and those relaxing effects can stack on top of each other, so you might feel groggier than expected, have more trouble staying alert if you wake up, or feel a bit foggy the next morning.

Keep in mind this concern comes mostly from lab and animal studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, since both can make you sleepy, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Ramelteon tablets — sold as the brand Rozerem and as generic ramelteon — are used to treat insomnia when the main problem is trouble falling asleep at the start of the night. It is not indicated for difficulty staying asleep.

Clinical studies supporting its effectiveness ran up to six months in both adults and elderly patients.
