Soy and Doxazosin Mesylate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Doxazosin Mesylate

Doxazosin Mesylate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Soy interacts with.

Theoretically soy protein may have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Although some contradictory research exists, most clinical evidence suggests that consuming soy protein modestly reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure in individuals with prehypertension or hypertension.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence A

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: soy and doxazosin (Cardura) can both nudge your blood pressure down, so together the effect may add up a little. Doxazosin already relaxes your blood vessels, and decent research suggests regular soy protein can modestly lower blood pressure too. Stack them and you might feel more lightheaded, dizzy, or wobbly, especially when standing up quickly.

The good news is this is usually mild, and the everyday soy in foods like tofu, edamame, or soy milk is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated soy isoflavone supplements are where I'd be more cautious. Doxazosin can already cause a bigger drop with your first dose, so if you start a soy supplement, check in with your pharmacist or doctor and watch how you feel.

About Soy

What is Soy?

  • Menopause symptoms (hot flashes)
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Bone health
  • Plant-based protein source
  • General nutrition

Soy is a nutritious bean that is a staple food and a popular source of plant protein and isoflavones. Eating soy foods as part of a balanced diet is generally considered safe for most people, and there is moderate evidence it may modestly help cholesterol and some menopause symptoms, though results vary. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated soy isoflavone supplements, especially if you have a history of hormone-sensitive conditions.

About Doxazosin

What Is Doxazosin Used For?

Brand name: Cardura

Doxazosin tablets — sold as Cardura, Doxazosin, and Doxazosin mesylate — treat two conditions: the urinary symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, an enlarged prostate) and high blood pressure (hypertension). For hypertension, lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like stroke and heart attack.

Cardura XL (extended-release tablet) is approved only for BPH symptoms. It is not approved for the treatment of hypertension.
