Here's the concern with this combo: your body clears Latuda (lurasidone) mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. St. John's wort speeds that enzyme up, so it tends to flush lurasidone out of your system faster. Lower drug levels can mean it just doesn't work as well, and that's a real problem when you're relying on it to keep symptoms of schizophrenia or bipolar depression under control.

In plain terms, your mood, thinking, or mania could slip back even though you're taking your pill every day. This isn't just a lab guess either, the labeling actually warns against using strong enzyme-boosters like St. John's wort with lurasidone. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Loop in your pharmacist or prescriber first so they can guide you safely.

What Is Lurasidone Used For?

Brand name: Latuda

Lurasidone hydrochloride tablets are approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged 13 to 17, and to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression) in adults and children aged 10 to 17. Latuda is one of the brand names under which lurasidone is available as a tablet.

For bipolar depression, lurasidone can be used on its own (monotherapy) in adults and pediatric patients aged 10 to 17, or used alongside lithium or valproate (adjunctive therapy) in adults.
