Strawberry and Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate

Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Strawberry interacts with.

In vitro and animal research suggests that strawberry extract can inhibit platelet aggregation due to its phenolic content. Theoretically, strawberry might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The piece of this combo pill that matters here is the aspirin. Aspirin already thins your blood a bit by keeping platelets from clumping together. Lab and animal studies hint that the plant compounds in strawberries (the polyphenols) may do a mild version of the same thing. Put them together and, in theory, you could nudge your bleeding risk up a little, showing up as easier bruising, nosebleeds, or a cut that takes longer to stop.

That said, this is weak, test-tube level evidence, and eating strawberries as a normal food is very unlikely to cause a problem. Concentrated strawberry supplements are a different story. If you take one regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, and never change your medication on your own.

“Anacin with Codeine combines aspirin, caffeine, and codeine, and each of the three picks up its own supplement problems, so this is a list worth real caution. Just over half of the 398 ingredients here, 202 of them, can add to aspirin's blood-thinning action and raise bleeding risk.”
