Strophanthus and Enalapril Maleate

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Enalapril Maleate and Strophanthus in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Enalapril Maleate

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Enalapril Maleate is filed under 5 classifications — including ace inhibitors (aceis), antihypertensive drugs, photosensitizing drugs. Strophanthus has documented interactions with 6 drug classes — the most serious being quinidine (major), quinine (major) and corticosteroids (moderate) — and none of Enalapril Maleate’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

What Strophanthus Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Enalapril Maleate. It is the side-effect record for Strophanthus on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Strophanthus, this list is the first place to look. One entry is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Strophanthus — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Enalapril Maleate’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Enalapril Maleate column appears here.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Enalapril Maleate page

“Potassium is the supplement I worry about first with enalapril maleate (Vasotec, Epaned). This ACE inhibitor, used for high blood pressure and heart failure, already makes the body hold onto potassium, so adding more can raise blood levels too far, a problem called hyperkalemia.”

About Strophanthus

What is Strophanthus?

  • Heart failure
  • Angina (chest pain)
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Circulation support
  • Traditional African arrow poison (historical)

Strophanthus is a plant that contains powerful heart-affecting compounds called cardiac glycosides (the best known is ouabain/g-strophanthin). Because these substances can strongly affect heart rhythm and are toxic in the wrong amount, Strophanthus is not a casual supplement and should never be used without close medical supervision. Reliable modern evidence for its supplement use is limited.

Strophanthus gratus · Apocynaceae · Seeds (and the seed-derived glycoside ouabain/g-strophanthin) · Oral drops/tinctures, capsules, and historically injectable extracts (mostly outside the U.S.)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Strophanthus is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Strophanthus record says about it on its own.

Strophanthus: dosing

There is no well-established, standardized supplement dose for Strophanthus, and the strength of products can vary a lot. Because the active glycosides are potent and potentially toxic, picking a dose on your own is not safe.If a product is used, follow the exact directions on the label and use it only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare provider. We deliberately do not list specific milligram amounts here.

About Enalapril

What Is Enalapril Used For?

Brand names: Vasotec, Epaned

Enalapril treats high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats symptomatic heart failure. It is used for asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction (a weak pumping chamber of the heart without symptoms) to slow the development of overt heart failure and reduce hospital stays for heart failure. Enalapril oral solution (including Epaned) is labeled for high blood pressure in adults and children older than one month.
