Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Yosprala (which is aspirin paired with omeprazole). The aspirin half already works by keeping your platelets from clumping together, which is exactly how it protects your heart and brain. In lab dish studies, Swallowroot seemed to do something similar, slowing platelets down too. Stack the two and you could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk a little higher.

What might that look like day to day? Easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or cuts that are slow to stop. I want to be honest though: this concern comes only from test-tube and animal work, not from people, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Food or pickled amounts are unlikely to matter much, but concentrated supplements are a different story. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Omeprazole page

“Yosprala pairs aspirin, a blood thinner, with omeprazole, an acid reducer whose job is to shield the stomach from that aspirin, so this list carries real weight and warrants genuine care. Of the 318 supplements and herbs on file, nine are rated major, and understanding those first matters more than reading the rest.”

About Swallowroot

What is Swallowroot?

  • Digestive complaints
  • General tonic and appetite stimulant
  • Blood purifier in folk medicine
  • Antimicrobial and food preservative
  • Cooling drink in hot weather

Swallowroot (Decalepis hamiltonii) is a root used in South Indian folk medicine and as a food flavoring, often pickled or made into a cooling drink. Modern scientific evidence for its health benefits in people is very limited, resting mostly on laboratory and animal studies, so its effectiveness is not proven. If you are considering it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
