Hay prepared from dried sweet vernal grass contains an anticoagulant, dicoumarol, which has been associated with fatal hemorrhages in animals. Theoretically, taking dried sweet vernal grass might cause additive effects and side effects with drugs having anticoagulant or antiplatelet properties.

Here's the concern with pairing Sweet Vernal Grass and your Eliquis (apixaban). This grass naturally contains coumarin, and when it's dried into hay it can form dicoumarol, a compound with blood-thinning activity of its own. Apixaban is already a blood thinner (a factor Xa inhibitor), so stacking the two could, in theory, push your blood-thinning effect higher than intended.

If that happened, you might notice easier bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding that's slow to stop. I want to be honest, though: this warning is theoretical, based on how the plant behaves rather than real human studies, and casual exposure to the scent is very different from taking a concentrated supplement. Still, since bleeding risk is nothing to gamble with, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using any Sweet Vernal Grass product.

Sweet Vernal Grass is a fragrant European meadow grass best known for the sweet, hay-like smell it gets from coumarin. It has a long history as a flavoring and a folk calming remedy, but there is very little human research to support any health benefit. It is also a well-known cause of grass-pollen allergies, so people prone to hay fever should be cautious.

About Apixaban

What Is Apixaban Used For?

Brand name: Eliquis

Apixaban is used to reduce the risk of stroke and dangerous clots traveling through the body in adults with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). It is also used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in the leg) in adults after hip or knee replacement surgery, and to treat DVT and pulmonary embolism (PE — a blood clot in the lungs) in adults, including reducing the risk of those clots coming back.

Eliquis (the brand-name tablet and kit) is additionally approved to treat venous thromboembolism (VTE — blood clots in the veins) and reduce the risk of recurrent VTE in pediatric patients from birth and older, after at least 5 days of initial anticoagulant treatment. The generic apixaban tablet carries the adult indications only.
