Hay prepared from dried sweet vernal grass contains an anticoagulant, dicoumarol, which has been associated with fatal hemorrhages in animals. Theoretically, taking dried sweet vernal grass might cause additive effects and side effects with drugs having anticoagulant or antiplatelet properties.

Here's the gist: when sweet vernal grass dries out, its coumarin can turn into dicoumarol, a natural blood thinner. Clopidogrel (Plavix) already works to keep your platelets from clumping and forming clots. Stacking a second blood-thinning effect on top could, in theory, push things too far and make it easier to bruise or bleed. Think nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding that's slow to stop.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This is a theoretical concern drawn from pharmacology and animal reports, not human studies, and a sniff of pleasant hay scent won't do anything. Concentrated dried-grass supplements are a different story. If you're considering one, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Clopidogrel Used For?

Brand name: Plavix

Clopidogrel tablets are used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) — including unstable angina and non-ST-elevation or ST-elevation heart attacks — and in people with a history of recent heart attack, recent stroke, or established peripheral arterial disease. For ACS, it is typically given alongside aspirin.

It works by preventing platelets (blood cells that trigger clotting) from clumping together, which helps keep arteries open and lowers the chance of a dangerous clot forming.
