Sweet Vernal Grass and Diclofenac Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Diclofenac Sodium

Diclofenac Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Sweet Vernal Grass interacts with.

Hay prepared from dried sweet vernal grass contains an anticoagulant, dicoumarol, which has been associated with fatal hemorrhages in animals. Theoretically, taking dried sweet vernal grass might cause additive effects and side effects with drugs having anticoagulant or antiplatelet properties.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. When sweet vernal grass is dried (think hay), some of its coumarin can turn into dicoumarol, a blood-thinning compound. Diclofenac is an NSAID, and on its own it can make it a little harder for your blood to clot and can be rough on the stomach lining. So in theory, pairing the two could add up and raise your risk of bleeding or bruising.

The important thing to know is that this is only a theoretical concern, based on how these compounds behave, not on real cases in people. Still, watch for signs like easy bruising, nosebleeds, dark or bloody stools, or stomach pain. If you take diclofenac regularly and want to use this supplement, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Diclofenac Sodium page

“Diclofenac (Voltaren), a daily mainstay for arthritis and joint pain, comes with a supplement list that calls for real vigilance. Of the 308 ingredients on file, 7 rate major, and roughly two hundred entries share a single theme: anything with blood-thinning activity adds to diclofenac's own bleeding risk, especially in the stomach.”

About Sweet Vernal Grass

What is Sweet Vernal Grass?

  • Trouble sleeping
  • Mild anxiety or restlessness
  • Hay fever and allergy symptoms (as a known trigger, sometimes studied)
  • Used as a fragrant flavoring in foods and drinks
  • Folk use for nausea or upset stomach

Sweet Vernal Grass is a fragrant European meadow grass best known for the sweet, hay-like smell it gets from coumarin. It has a long history as a flavoring and a folk calming remedy, but there is very little human research to support any health benefit. It is also a well-known cause of grass-pollen allergies, so people prone to hay fever should be cautious.
