Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combo product has three active parts, but the tamarind interaction here is really about the aspirin piece. In one study, tamarind fruit extract eaten as part of a millet porridge appeared to boost how much aspirin the body absorbed, nudging blood levels higher. So in theory, tamarind could make the aspirin in this medicine hit a little harder.

What that might look like in real life is more of aspirin's usual effects, like stomach upset, heartburn, or a higher chance of stomach irritation or bleeding. The caffeine and codeine parts are not the focus of this interaction. Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical, and everyday culinary amounts of tamarind are unlikely to be a big deal. Concentrated extracts are the bigger question, so check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Caffeine, Codeine Phosphate page

“Anacin with Codeine combines aspirin, caffeine, and codeine, and each of the three picks up its own supplement problems, so this is a list worth real caution. Just over half of the 398 ingredients here, 202 of them, can add to aspirin's blood-thinning action and raise bleeding risk.”

About Tamarind

What is Tamarind?

  • Constipation and digestive upset
  • Culinary flavoring
  • Fever and sore throat
  • Antioxidant support
  • Traditional wound or skin care

Tamarind is a tangy tropical fruit widely used in cooking and traditional medicine, mainly for digestion and as a mild laxative. While it is a nutritious food, strong human evidence for most of its medicinal claims is limited, so use it mainly as a food and talk to your pharmacist before using concentrated supplements.
